Building on the legacy of Charles Perry, first Anglican Bishop of Melbourne, our city at the beginning of the 20th century was a centre for Gospel ministry and leadership. More broadly, the founders of Melbourne desired to create here a model of Christian civilisation. Our lecture in 2012, to be delivered by the Rev Dr Darrell Paproth, explores the evangelistic energy in Melbourne between the Great Centennial Mission of 1888, and the visit of Reuben A. Torrey in 1902, and challenges us to consider the circumstances which created such significant evangelical witness, and how we might recapture such a vision for the power of the Gospel in our own day. Dr Paproth taught for many years at the Bible College of Victoria, and has written extensively in the areas of Melbourne and Anglican history.
The Perry Lecture is sponsored by St James' Old Cathedral, West Melbourne, the Evangelical Fellowship in the Anglican Communion, and the Jonathan Edwards Center at Ridley Melbourne.
Date: 5:30pm, 2 August 2012, in the Stanway Lecture Room at Ridley Melbourne
